Rojak Cendol Bawah Pokok at Taman Bahagia

What is better than rojak and cendol? Rojak and cendol under a tree at a playground!

Before the CMCO, if you stopped at Taman Bahagia LRT station, you would see a bunch of happy people enjoying rojak and cendol at a playground shaded with perennial trees.

The sight of Uncle Ayub's rojak truck has provided me much comfort during happy and not so happy days for as long as I can remember. The environment is simply a healer. The green field is visited by birds and wind and protected from the sun by a natural canopy of foliage. Merely furnished with upcycled wooden cable drums, plastic chairs and seats contributed by the public playground, this rojak truck has been the go-to rojak place for lunch and tea in the neighborhood. Residents in the garden seem to have assimilated Uncle Ayub's business in their lives since 1985.

His crunchy rojak doused with sweet peanut sauce is best matched with none other than the milky cendol concocted with morsels of ingredients shaved by his assistant.

Makan Sutra opens approximately at noon till sold out, usually at 5-6pm.

I have been here when I was happy and when I was not so happy for as long as I can remember

Mohana Restaurant @ Klang

When in Klang, imbibe the Indian part of Klang with an authentic Indian drink and sweets. Pass by Mohana Restaurant and you will pause for its colourful view of Indian sweets in different shapes and sizes behind the transparent glass.

Imbibe the Indian part of Klang with authentic Indian food
First order of business, get a dose of Indian tea or properly said, masala chai. The masala chai was initially consumed by the Indians as a form of herbal medicine rather than a flavoured beverage. The ancient Ayurvedic texts influenced some of the chai malasa spice mixtures.

The British began promoting the tea as a beverage for for pleasurable consumption in India but in English style. After several episodes of evolution, the masala chai is made it through as an Indian staple.

When you receive the drink at Mohana Restaurant, be mesmerized by the smell of herbs. You can tell that a lot has gone into the cup of tea. I could make out that there was definitely ginger, cinnamon and star anise. After some research, I found out other spices are cardamom, fennel seeds, nutmeg, and cloves. It comes in a metal cup that is in a mini basin. The basin is not for nothing.

Stretch your tea to cool it or to further bring out the fragrance in the tea. While doing that, remember to get some one to record it for the Gram =)

Indian sweets are famed to be extremely sugary. This is a habit inherited from the lack of technology in the olden days. In hot and humid India, without refrigerators, one way to preserve these milk and coconut-based desserts is to sweeten them. Here are all the sweets available at Mohana's. Can you name all of them?

Do note that although the sweets look attractive and can be addictive (because of sugar), these energy bars should be eaten in moderation to avoid health problems like obesity and diabetes.

Can you name all the sweets?

Kacang putih
If banana leaf rice is your choice of meal here, be warned as it would be difficult to resist as the side dishes are dished right to your face giving you no restriction to those delicious options like fried fish, fried chicken, curry mutton and eggs. The banana leaf style here interestingly resembles the serving style of Chinese dim sum restaurants.

Don't they look like dim sum?

Yarl Restaurant @ Brickfields

Tucked at the corner of Brickfields, Yarl Restaurant may look like any ordinary Indian restaurant. Little do many know that it is one of the very few restaurants serving authentic Sri Langkan food. It was impressive to find out their level of commitment to the originality of Jaffna cuisine as all vital ingredients are imported from Sri Lanka itself.

Different from a 'mamak', this restaurant adopted a more modern cafe setting for the comfort of their patrons. One happy observation was the 'A' sign for cleanliness.
A little taste of Sri Lanka with friends
Yarl Restaurant at Brickfields
The restaurant sports a modern interior
Clockwise from bottom right- Egg appam (RM3), sweet appam (RM2.50) and plain appam (RM2)
Perfect as snack, Appams come in 3 variations in Yarl. Although originally a little sweet, it can be savoury with egg or sweetened even more with brown sugar. Idi sambal is spiced coconut shavings that pairs well with the Appams.

Crab curry (RM10 per 100g) with puttu (RM2.50)
Yarl Restaurant's curry dishes marries well with puttu as base accompanied by spiced coconut and coconut milk with turmeric. While the curry is piquantly flavoured with herbs and spices, the fresh crab meat balances the heavy curry with natural savoury sweetness. The contrast of the two kept me digging for more!

Chicken kothu (RM10)
When in the restaurant, you might pick up a rhythmic clanking from the kitchen. It is because of Kothu. Kothu is chopped up roti with your choice of vegetable, egg, chicken, mutton or prawn. Taste wise, it is not much different from what I imagined it to be, but the bite sized roti makes it fun to consume especially over a chat.

Yarl egg dosai (RM3)
If you are an egg fan, Sri Langkan egg dosai is quite convincing. Egg is evenly and generously spread throughout the dosai leaving little spots of plain dough giving the whole piece a fragrant and enjoyable taste especially if pinched with a little idi sambal and dhal.

Kayra Authentic Kerala Cuisine @ TTDI

Indian food does not always have to come in the form of roti canai or banana leaf. Try a Thali meal next time! A Thali meal is an Indian and Nepalese meal made up of a selection of various dishes. According to Indian customs, a proper meal should be a perfect balance of all 6 flavours- sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy [1]
My Indian balanced meal today
There is a place in the Taman Tun neighbourhood where you can get your Thali fix. Kayra serves authentic Kerala cuisines that enriche your palate with the culture that comes with it. The first thing that I noticed about the restaurant is its cleanliness and simplicity in style.

Modern and minimalist set up of restaurant
Cleanliness of restaurant is apparent
Ginger Chiller (Ginger, lime and apple juice) RM11.90
The Ginger Chiller was the drink of choice that day. A refreshing concoction of ginger, lime and apple juice quenches perfectly bringing temperature down from the sweltering afternoon and a standby extinguisher for the spicy dishes later.
Vegetarian Thali set meal RM13.90 (excluding drink)
The Vegetarian Thali is the basic set meal which comes with five dishes in ramekin bowls which consist of (from bottom left):
1. Avial- classic kerala mixed vegetable that has been cooked to a soft texture in coconut milk
2. Sambar- variation of dhal with spices
3. Thoran- this portion is the vege of the day. Crispy cabbage with a little spiciness
4. Pachadi- a beetroot dish cooked with mustard
5. Erissery- a mix of pumpkin and lentil with spices

The last 2 are raita (yogurt) which mellows the spiciness when it gets too hot and Payasam (dessert) to wash the palate.

Every set meal has the dish of your choice accompanying the Vegetarian Thali.
Ginger pickle is appetizing
On the sides make sure you find the brown blob which is the Kerala's Ginger Pickle which I find pretty awesome. It is appetizing enough to have rice eaten only with it. Ginger is cooked into a mash and sweetened. It does not have stark ginger taste, only comforting sweetness.
Seafood Molee as Thali set meal RM19.90
Ala carte RM14.00
Seafood Molee turns out to be one of my favourite. The golden yellow dish is non-spicy and infused with flavours of prawn and squid. Cooked in coconut milk and tumeric, its rich taste is not too cloying. I can go for a second plate of rice with its gravy.
Prawn Mango Curry as Thali set meal RM18.90
Ala carte RM12.90
The Prawn Mango Curry has a very engaging flavour that keeps you going for scoops. Prawns are juicy and fresh.
Chicken as Thali set meal RM15.90
Ala carte RM8.00
The Roasted Chicken is rolled over fire and coated with curry. If you are a fan of spiciness, this flavourful dish could satisfy you.
Fried chicken as Thali set meal RM15.90
Ala carte RM8.00
The Fried Chicken is a joy to have for non-spicy eaters. Well seasoned and evenly fried, its crisp is light on the outside and juiciness sealed inside.
Fried fish Thali set meal RM17.90
Tenggiri fish is a loyal item in Indian restaurants. The Fried Fish is lightly fried and its natural flavours did the talking.
Mutton Thali set meal RM17.90
Ala carte RM9.90
The Mutton dish is infused with sufficient spices and not too overwhelming sans the gamy odour. The meat however could be more tender.
Chicken Biryani served with onion raita RM17.00
Chicken Biryani is a safe option with fragrant rice accompanied by onion raita (yogurt)
Spicy Kerala Chicken Wrap served with raita RM13.90
For those who wants a lighter meal, the Spicy Kerala Chicken Wrap is a good choice. As its name suggests, Spicy Kerala Chicken Wrap will make your tongue a little hot. Shredded chicken meat is well mixed with the sauce. Dip it into the raita (yogurt) to balance up the spiciness.
Ending on a sweet note with Payasam of the day as dessert
Comes in a ramekin bowl with set Thali
Ala carte RM10.00
I ended my Keralite adventure with Payasam which is a blend of banana, grape and brown sugar. It tastes comforting with a good bodied texture. It is not too cloying and tastes better than it looks. Desserts differ from day to day.
