Big Mom Beancurd @ Ipoh

There is no running away from tau fu fah in Ipoh and I am not talking about the frequently talked about Funny Mountain. Big Mom Beancurd has now joined the tau fu fah scene in the limestone city. In Ipoh, tau foo fah is down-to-earth and not fancy like those premium-priced ones in KL. The soy bean dessert stays affordable and nutritious.

Big Mom Beancurd is a dream come true for tau foo fah lovers like me who wished that they can have every topping possible without damaging the wallet. Not only that, the quality that comes in that China is indeed satisfying.

It does take a moment to choose the toppings from the list. But do remember that not all ingredients agree with each other. With tau foo fah as base, we decided to choose a maximum of 2 toppings to that the tongue can properly savour the tastes. However, you are free to choose all 4 at once.

Clockwise from left: Red bean and peanut toppings,
plain red bean toppings and barley ginko and peach gum topping

Apart of the smoothness of the beancurd, the syrup is judged for a good bowl of tau foo fah. At first scoop, the fragrance of the ginger syrup stole my attention. It was pronounced and indeed pleasurable. It seems like Big Mom knows the secret to capture discerning tau foo fah eaters' hearts. Chrysanthemum syrup is available every

The red bean and peanut combination will be voted by those who likes a more distinct taste. Peanut gave it a fun crunch while the red bean could be softer.

Barley ginko and peach gum combination is Big Mom's personal favourite. She gave me a convincing nudge to put down that order. I was glad I did as the peach gum was very soothing and ginko was sweet.

When I reached the bottom, I found the beancurd to have fair smoothness and density. It serves as a good base to enjoy all those toppings.

Each topping is only RM0.70

Other than tau foo fah, there are curry chee chee cheong fun and purple sweet potato dessert available.

The corner shop is visited by customers of all ages. Families came for afternoon tea and some youths made it a good reason for gatherings. The interior incorporates the left overs of the building to reflect the olden days with tasselated floor and wooden furniture.
